Make Your Carpets Last Longer
Carpets are expensive. Many consider them an investment. After spending so much time, money, and effort picking out the right one, buying it, and having it installed; the last thing you would want to do is have to replace it over and over again. That is why knowing how to properly care for and maintain your carpet is invaluable to the life of your carpet.
Here are a few tips on how you can successfully maintain your carpets and make them last longer:
1. Keep Your Carpets Clean. You might want to take off your shoes every time you walk on your carpets but it’s okay to leave your socks on. Wearing socks actually helps protect the fibers of your carpet. The softer, cushioned weight of your socked feet is gentler on the carpet fibers than the friction from your skin. You also want to vacuum regularly. At least once or twice a week and as much as once a day for heavy traffic areas. Also, keep your vacuum units clean as well. Always check your vacuum for any clogs in the roller brush, tube, and filters. Empty or change the vacuum bags when it is half full. Check your vacuum’s belt for any spots, cracks, tears, or signs of being worn. Replace belts if necessary.
2. Always Be Prepared. Accidents happen all the time. If something spills onto your carpet, it pays to have basic cleaning materials stowed away somewhere near. If something spills, get paper towels or a clean piece of cloth. Quickly blot out as much liquid as you can or scoop up any solid pieces. Use carpet cleaning shampoos to take out possible stains. Remember it is always easier to clean something that has just spilled than something that has already dried up. If you’re out of carpet shampoo, use fragrance free liquid dish soap. If you don’t have this either, sprinkle salt onto your carpet and let it absorb the liquid while you get some from your neighbor. The important thing is to act fast and not to let the spill dry up.
3. Move Heavy Stuff Around. Okay, if you have heavy furniture on top of your carpets, you will most likely have permanent impressions on your carpets. The trick to this problem is to regularly move your furniture around. It doesn’t have to be a great distance, just in a different position so as to let the fibers regain their original shape. Just remember to lift furniture and not to drag. Chairs are tricky. The constant movement and friction from chairs play a significant role in the carpet’s wear and tear. Keep this in mind when planning to place carpets in your dining area.
4. Good Carpet Cleaners. Employing the services of a professional carpet cleaner at least once every 6-12 months is another good way to protect your investments. Professional carpet cleaners will be able to clean your carpets more thoroughly, reaching even the inside and bottom parts of your carpet fibers. Using their machines and stronger cleaning chemicals, carpets are given an intense cleaning that eliminates dust, dust mites, pollen, molds, and fungi.
Protecting your carpets is as simple as caring for them more. Following just these few basic steps will assist in maximizing the life of your carpet and save you from any unnecessary spending.…
