Step one: Start by drawing each room on a piece of graph paper and insert the dimensions at the widest points. It is important to measure about half way through the doorways. The larger you can draw this the better it is, because you will want to sketch in the carpet pieces along with their dimensions.

Step two: After you have drawn each room, figure out which way you want to lay the carpet. It is important to remember that carpet should be laid in the same direction. If you don’t it usually looks like they are two different colors.

Step Three: Remember that carpet usually comes in 12′ rolls. On your drawings draw in your 12′ wide rolls and mark them with an arrow showing the direction it will run. Try to avoid placing seams in high traffic areas. Your seams should also flow with the light and traffic patterns not against or across. On a second sheet of paper, draw a long rectangle down the page scaled so that the width equals 12 feet. This is where you will draw your cuts. If your measurement for your first room happens to be 10 feet, than you would mark off 10’4″ on the long roll. Continue in this way for all the large pieces that are over 12 feet wide.

Step Four: Now draw in the pieces that you need to fill the holes. Be sure to draw them on the long cut page a few inches wider than you actually need so that you will have a little extra for the installation process. Mark them on both drawing with an A, B etc. so you can remember which one is which. You may need to have additional seams in some areas. For example, if you have a 30 inch gap between the carpet and the wall that runs for 10 feet, you can cut a quantity of 4; 33 inch wide pieces and only adds about a 3 foot length on your roll drawing. Be sure the show the 4 pieces on the drawing.

If you have followed the above steps, you can now easily see how much carpet total you need, how much waste you will have and where each seam will be.
