Carpet Beetles Eat More Than Rugs

Carpet Beetles Eat More Than Rugs

At first, you may think you have moths in your home. But if you are finding damaged clothes, carpet, upholstery and other items, it most likely is carpet beetles. These little pests are more common than most homeowners realize. They can be very destructive, and to make it worse, they are quite difficult to control. You may find one or two beetles or the evidence they leave behind, but the problem can grow if not handled properly and quickly.

Besides feasting on your belongings, these beetle larvae shed small hairs which can cause allergies. Infestations of these pests have been linked to the spread of infectious diseases, like Anthrax.

Part of the problem with controlling carpet beetles is that they live in many areas of a home and eat more than carpet. They consume anything containing organic fibers and organic products. Here is a sampling of the preferred carpet beetle buffet:

Household Items

Carpets – Most synthetic carpets contain some organic materials

Rugs

Drapery

Furniture

Clothing – especially cotton, silk and wool

Household linens – tablecloths, dishtowels, sheets, towelsIn the Pantry

Cereal

Corn

Flour

Grains

Nuts

Pasta

Seeds

Birdseed

Pet FoodMisc.

Hair (pet or human)

Animal Fur

Animal hides

Taxidermy animals

Dead animal carcassesThere are three species of carpet beetle that are the most common problem for homeowners. These are the varied carpet beetle, the black carpet beetle and the furniture carpet beetle. Larvae are by far the most harmful stage in their lifecycle. Females lay anywhere from 50 to 100 eggs near food sources. An adult beetle can live four years, laying eggs once a year. Eggs are incredibly resilient. Once the eggs develop into cocoons and larvae, they stay in this stage nearly a year. The larvae is the most destructive stage. Both eggs and larvae are very difficult to detect since they tend to blend in with the fabric they inhabit. Once they mature, carpet beetles are scavengers and may be found in areas well away from food sources.

You may find one or two larvae crawling on surfaces. But the first sign of a carpet beetle infestation is usually irregular holes chewed in fabrics. They feed on the nap of fabrics and carpeting without eating the base threads. If you are finding holes in fabrics around your home, and think the damage is due to carpet beetles, look for fecal pellets and skins shed by the larva. They most often feed in dark secluded places, so do a thorough inspection for them in these areas:

Undersides of furniture

In areas around or behind furniture where pet hair may accumulate

Corners and bottoms of drawers

Along baseboards where carpet meets molding

Under area rugs and carpets

Inside closets – especially in corners

In basements and attics

Between walls and insulation

In and under storage boxes

On window and door frame moldings

In gaps alongside and above and below shelving

Outside your home where there might be dead rodents or birds…

Playa Del Carmen Condos Benefit From Fifth Avenue Investment

The Mexico condo market in beachfront tourism areas are heavily dependent on that industry, and can benefit greatly from tourism focused investment, in terms of lifestyle, property value, and rental income. Playa del Carmen is no exception.
This is why it’s of great importance for Playa del Carmen condo buyers that the city is currently planning heavy investment into Fifth Avenue, the main downtown tourist street, forming the heart of the area’s lifestyle.
The new project will focus on maintenance and ongoing development of the street’s image, with a budget of about 1.5 million USD for this year, and is expected to increase significantly in December, for 2011.
Fifth Avenue is a pedestrian street which runs parallel to the beachfront, and is host to many features which draw tourists to this area; small, boutique hotels, fine international dining ranging from elegant takes on Mayan traditions to beautiful pasta bars, live music, ice-cream shops, pizzerias, jewelry and clothing stores, and much more.
The investment will cover the original stretch of the the downtown road, running from First St. South (where the street begins at an elegant outdoor plaza and a beachfront park) to Constituyentes Ave. Beyond this begins the newer, Italian section of the street.
A large number of the condos bought by expats are within walking distance of this street; the more expensive ones are in the one-block space between Fifth Ave. and the beach, and many other in just about all price ranges are 4-5 blocks back from Fifth, still within short walking distance both to this tourist street and to the beach.
Whether within walking distance or not, the street is a sort of social hub for the area, and most people make their way down to enjoy drinks in comfortable patio cafes and events such as the weekly art-walk or annual beachfront jazz festival. This is just as true for Mexico homes in outlying areas, not directly downtown.
The project, which was authorized in late September, 2010, aims to continue developing the image of Fifth Avenue through improved lighting and an increased number of benches to make the walks even more relaxing.
A related project includes building a new beachfront access with parking in an up-and-coming area of Fifth Avenue further north, at 88th St. The funds for the project are being provided by both the state and federal governments.

Closet Organization and Wardrobe Management

Closet Organization and Wardrobe Management

The kitchen may be the heart of the home but the closet is command central for creating the image you present to the world. It’s a place for function, organization and imagination.

If your closet is disorganized it’s more difficult to appear composed and prepared. You’re more likely to wear the same few outfits repeatedly – with the same combination of accessories – if you’re even taking the time to find your accessories!

If your closet is organized your morning routine is streamlined. You’re able to locate the right shoes instead of a pair that will ‘have to do’. Since everything is easy to see you can quickly try a new combination (which is technically a new outfit). What you wear will reflect your personality and creativity instead of your tight schedule and disorganization.

Your closet and wardrobe are the tools you use to look good (which generally translates to feeling good). Here are a few tips to make them work for you:

1. Everything should be visible but your best pieces should be easiest to reach. That way if you are pressed for time you can grab something reliable that makes you feel comfortable.

2. Never hang anything in the closet that needs repair or laundering. At best it will slow you down in the morning when you put it on and then have to find something else when you realize the hem is out or there’s a spot on the collar. At worst you’ll wear something that’s going to make you uncomfortable and/or self-conscious all day.

3. Remix – take a few minutes every week to discover some new combinations. That basic dress you always wear with the same jacket will look completely different with a cardigan and a scarf. Combine colors you haven’t worn together before. Switch up your shoes and jewelry. That’s what shopping at home is all about. New outfits for free!

4. Motivate! Things that ‘almost’ fit should be visible (maybe hung on the back of the bathroom or closet door) to motivate you. I know a lot of people disagree but if you pass on dessert and succeed in getting back into something that used to fit it’s like a new outfit on steroids!

5. Discard at least one item from your closet every week. Few of us have the hours it takes to completely empty the closet and examine and categorize each piece so just take baby steps. Some weeks you’ll clear out several pieces that don’t belong in your wardrobe. The goal is to eliminate anything that doesn’t serve you well and donate it to charity or a friend or try a resale shop.

A great outfit is comfortable, suitable for the occasion and tells the world about you through color and style. Show your personality with a whimsical piece of jewelry to lighten the severity of a black dress or gray jacket. Bright colors are conversation starters. Shoes that provide a pop of color add a spring to your step. A little more attention to your wardrobe can result in a substantial mood boost. A smile can light up your face — and a great outfit can light up your smile!…

Hiring a Real-Estate Agent to Sell Your House

If you are reading this, it means that you are planning to sell your place and trying to decide upon which realtor to choose. Well, we are here to make your job easier.
Start by getting recommendations from friends and acquaintances. But, do not hire someone without properly interviewing just because he/she got your friend an amazing deal. Remember, this is just the first step.
Have a look at what questions you need to ask your agent so that you get the best price.
• How long have you been in the business?
It goes without saying that the longer the duration, the better are your chances to find a good buyer.
• What are your credentials and which associations are you affiliated to?
At the very least, he/she should have a license. Look for a realtor who is affiliated to the National Association of Realtors (NAR) as she would be professionally trained in the business.
• What are your stats for the past year?
Inquire about the houses she listed but couldn’t sell. Ask for at least two such instances, because he/she is likely to have prepared one story for you.
• Can you provide a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) for the area?
Commonly referred to as the “comps”, the CMA provides you a comparative analysis of the details of your property with other similar properties. A good realtor makes it a priority.
• Can you provide the references of the past 3 customers you listed?
This is an extremely important step. It is only against confidentiality agreements if their houses have already been sold. All you want to know from these customers is what the realtor is like.
• What commission would you charge?
A 3% commission is generally charged but if it is negotiable, go ahead and pull all threads. Getting the best deal is your right.
• Do you have a clear marketing plan?
It is better if you are provided this in written. Check details like how would your place be advertised and how often.
• What suggestions do you have with regard to staging the home as well as making any value-raising renovations?
Ask which renovations would have a significant effect on the potential price and how should you present the house to prospective buyers – be it switching on all the lights or moving a bit of furniture. You need to ask these questions before hiring.
• Do you have an assistant or support staff?
Choose an agent who has support staff but shows the place herself. Also, ask for the personal cell-phone no. of the agent so he/she is easily accessible.
• What disclosure laws apply to me?
Make no mistake here. Better still, cross check with others to avoid any trouble in the future.
• What agreements do I need to sign?
Read and understand all the clauses before you sign any agreement so that you are aware of all the intricacies that are part of any contract.…
