Most problems that involve road or asphalt repair have to do with minor cracks, crumbling of the surface which are not difficult to repair. The method and materials used depends on whether you are going for crack repairs, filling low spots, patching or seal-coating to prevent cracks from developing. Most of the material that you require for cracks repairs is available in shops that deal with construction materials.
It is not difficult to repair cracks by yourself without hiring a professional to do the work. Only, you must have the right material such as the joint sealant and the tools to do the job. It is also important to go for asphalt repair as soon as the cracks in your asphalt driveway start appearing. A good asphalt filler does a good job of asphalt repair if done as soon as cracks as small as half an inch appear. Crack fillers for crack repairs are available in cans or plastic bottles and can treat narrow cracks.
Procedure for Crack repairs:
If the problem is a crack, it should be cleaned thoroughly before going any further. In fact, care should be taken that there is no loose soil at all and a hard brush, broom or vacuum cleaner can be used to clean the crack thoroughly. This is because, for crack repairs to be successful, the crack patch has to stick strongly to the crack surface and this cannot happen if the crack is not clean.
Hence you may need water to clean the crack before the asphalt repair can be undertaken. If the crack is deep then it should be filled with sand or some non-reactive material before applying the crack filler.
Asphalt repair procedure:
Sometimes you will find that the level of your asphalt driveway is not even and there is a depression where water collects. This uneven driveway also needs repairs. Again for this kind of asphalt repair, the area in question should be thoroughly cleaned and no water should be standing there. A mixture of emulsified asphalt which is liquid to begin with and sets after you apply it, can be used so that the surface becomes even. This is done by spreading the emulsified asphalt and tamping it evenly. This asphalt repair patch requires about a day to dry, after which the entire asphalt driveway or part of the road should be seal-coated.
After crack repairs or after completing general asphalt repair, it is a good idea to seal coat the entire driveway. Not only does the drive way look as good as new but also sealing makes the asphalt resistant to damages by the sun, rain and also drippings of petrol and oil which will harm the asphalt and create pot holes in it.
